Mamie Houston, Director

The Iredell Statesville Community Enrichment Corporation (ISCEC) purchased a local South Statesville motel with a reputation for prostitution and illegal drug trade.  ISCEC had it demolished and built the South Statesville Skills Center (SSSC).

The SSSC provides an on-site opportunity for self-improvement and economic self-sufficiency for residents of South Statesville and the City of Statesville thereby providing a win-win situation for both.

SSSC Mission Statement

To empower the South Statesville community through collaborative services that improve education, strengthen families, and increase opportunities for success.

The following is a brief description of the programs that are currently available at the SSSC.

Mitchell Community College

GED Preparation:  This class prepares the adult student without a high school diploma to pass the five parts of the GED examination: literature, social studies, science, writing, and math.

Employability Lab:  This class provides students with the opportunity to improve keyboarding skills, practice job-seeking skills, prepare a resume, and improve basic skills as related to the workplace. Computer instruction and Internet knowledge are highly stressed as they relate to securing employment.

Career Development:  This class provides academic review, job-seeking skills/retention skills, team building/communication skills, and career enhancement strategies that can be utilized in any workplace environment.

DISCOVER:  This software allows students to analyze their skills, abilities, and interests.  The data from the students suggest the different career fields that are of interest based on the information given by the student.

Small Business Seminars/Counseling:  Counseling for individuals interested in starting their own business will be available several days each month.  The following seminars will be offered: Debt-free Living, How to Make a Budget, Ten Steps to Starting a Business, and How to Develop a Business Plan.

Super Saturday School Skills:  Enrichment for elementary school students.

Partnership for Young Children

This early childhood program empowers parents to give their child age prenatal-3 the best possible start in life.  A certified parent educator visits families monthly in their home or at the center to focus on the typical development of each child.  Age appropriate activities, language, bonding, and motor, emotional, and social development are discussed in each visit.  "Parents as Teachers" (PAT) parents can participate in the Baby Buck$ program by earning coupons for a wide range of activities.  Books for Babies provides a home library of children's books, and PAT parents can enroll free in the ELRC.

Teen Health, Incorporated

Teen Health will provide on-site, accessible programs for high-risk youth.  The following programs are offered free of cost to participants:

Responsible Attitudes Program (RAP Sessions):  These sessions include preventative classes about drugs, sexual activity, crime and violence; academic tutoring; mentoring; activities to increase self-esteem and resiliency; and safe recreational alternatives to risk-taking behavior.

The Latino Outreach:  RAP Sessions with Spanish language materials and with a bilingual program coordinator.

The Teen Entrepreneurship:  This program will allow 30 high school sophomores the opportunity to create and develop a business of their own choosing.

Support for Parents of Teens:

Pastors United Together (P.U.T.)

This group is composed of leaders and residents in the South Statesville community.  Two community summits with government and agency officials and residents took place to discuss ways to strengthen this community. The summits resulted in identifying key issues and action plans to move forward with.
