Public Housing Program

Provides low income families with a Safe, Decent and Affordable place to live. Rent is based on 30% of the monthly adjusted income. SHA has 574 Public Housing Units .

They are all inside the city limits, and are maintained by our own Maintenance Department. Public Housing Unit inspections occur semi-annually.

Section 8 Assistance Program

The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program provides a Housing Choice Voucher to low income families, the elderly, and the disabled that assists with rental payment for Safe, Decent, and Sanitary housing through the private sector. Since the rental assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find and rent privately owned housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, mobile homes, and apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program. and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing communities.  Inspection of Section 8 Units occur annually.  Section 8 Frequently Asked Questions.

IN THE HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM: A rental subsidy is paid directly to the landlord on behalf of the participating family. The family pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
